MyTimetable now offers a digital signage solution for lecture rooms. Students and staff are provided with an up to date view of the availability of a room, including the scheduled activities for the current day.
As a Web application, the room display application can run in any modern browser on any device. No proprietary hardware is required. The application is designed with resilience in mind, supporting offline operation and automatic upgrades.
The MyTimetable Room Display is now available for all MyTimetable customers free of charge.
Room availability and timetable
The room display displays the name of the lecture room, the time, the current availability of the room, and the timetable of the room. The availability of the lecture room is indicated by the colour of the top bar (green when free, red when occupied). Visually impaired users are assisted by also showing the availability textually.
The MyTimetable Room Display runs in any modern browser on any device, allowing for a cost effective digital signage solution. Devices can range from a wall mounted all-in-one pc or tablet, to a screen connected to a low cost Raspberry Pi 2 computer. No proprietary hardware is required.
Configuring the room display is easy. Just select a lecture room in the configuration screen, optionally filtering by building. A start and end time can also be configured, determining the time scale displayed on the display.
All settings are persisted automatically. It is also possible to provision a device automatically by pointing the browser to a URL containing the room identifier, start time, and end time.
Visiting the room display page again in the Web browser of a previously configured device will automatically show the room display again, without the need to reconfigure the device.
The room display application is designed with resilience in mind, and is able to still display information in the event of, for example, temporary connectivity loss.
By default, the application loads timetabling data for the current and next day. When no data can be retrieved from MyTimetable, the previously loaded data is used. After 15 minutes of connection loss, a warning is displayed informing the user that the displayed data might be outdated. An error is shown when running out of cached data.
When connectivity is restored, the application will automatically resume normal operation using an up to date timetable.
Since the MyTimetable Room Display runs in the browser, it needs to be refreshed when an application update is deployed to the MyTimetable server. The application detects when an update is available, and will then automatically refresh the browser. This prevents manually refreshing a potential large number of devices.
